JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — A Johnson City car dealership donated more than $50,000 to an area non-profit that delivers meals to those who cannot travel on their own.

Wallace Subaru of Johnson City presented Meals on Wheels Northeast Tennessee with a check for $52,604 on Wednesday.

According to Wallace Subaru, the dealership raised money for Meals on Wheels during its annual Subaru Share the Love Campaign. During late 2023 and early 2024, $500 was donated to Meals on Wheels Northeast Tennessee for every customer who bought a new Subaru at the dealership. Half of each $500 donation came from Subaru of America, while Wallace Subaru donated the other $250.

“We want to be more than a car dealer,” said Executive Manager of Wallace Subaru of Johnson City TC Baker. “We’re here to sell cars, and we love to sell cars, but we also believe it’s part of our mission to improve the community. So it’s our responsibility. We take great joy in giving back to our community in ways like this.”

Baker said employees at the dealership delivered some meals themselves.

Wallace Subaru of Johnson City donated $48,392 to Meals on Wheels Northeast Tennessee in 2023, totaling more than $100,000 in donations over two years.

“This money will be greatly appreciated because of the rising food costs to help deliver that mission of feeding the elderly,” Jason Cody, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels Northeast Tennessee, told News Channel 11.

Meals on Wheels Northeast Tennessee delivers food to senior citizens at their homes in Carter, Greene, Johnson, Hancock, Hawkins, Sullivan, Unicoi and Washington counties. The non-profit delivered 298,577 meals to nearly 3,000 clients in the region last year.
