Pennucci: Sisneros’ drive will serve him well in the pros

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) – Former ETSU first baseman, Cam Sisneros, will be officially signed into the Chicago Cubs organization in a matter of days.

Sisneros told reporters on Thursday, he was starting to get antsy before being drafted in the 14th Round earlier in the week. But, Buccaneer head coach, Joe Pennucci, was confident the lefty swinger would find a home in the pros.

“I had a pretty good feeling he was going to be picked one of those days,” he said Thursday. “If it’s Day 2 or Day 3 – it’s irrelevant in my opinion, because I think whoever takes him – it happened to be the Cubs – they’re getting a special player.”

Pennucci said he’s had about 50 of his previous players be signed or drafted by a Major League organization. But, Sisneros’ prowess at the plate is unique.

He brings a certain physicality to his approach and swing, while remaining incredibly disciplined.

“I think the stat that I’ll never see again in my career was more home runs than punch outs,” he said.

However, the true separator for Sisneros is his mentality.

“You know, you’re just getting an interesting kid that has a ton of power to all fields – that doesn’t swing and miss,” Pennucci said. “A kid that has some drive and wants to get better. He has the factor that, you know – he does give a crap, right?”

“That give-a-crap factor has taken him from being a JuCo guy, to being a good four-year, Division I guy, to being a good pro guy – to hopefully being a big-leaguer one day.”

Sisneros will start his big-league career at the Cubs facility on Monday with some physicals and tests, followed by the official signing of his contract.
