Johnson City Schools hosts free back-to-school haircuts event

JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Johnson City Schools (JCS) is offering free back-to-school haircuts for students on Monday.

The event marks the first time JCS has offered free haircuts ahead of the new school year.

“It has been fun,” Care Manager for JCS Carmen Acevedo said. “We had a lot of people coming in early and of course, our volunteers weren’t here, so they had to wait a little bit longer. But we have a good waiting area. We have stuff for the kids to do out there. We have snacks, we have waters and we have some activities out there.”

Barbers and stylists at the event are made up of local volunteers.

“We have someone to wash hair, we have a person to braid,” Acevedo said. “We have barbers [and stylists]. So basically, just as it’s like coming into a hair salon and getting whatever you want except hair color, it’s just haircuts and styles.”

Acevedo said the event will help students look and feel their best.

“It’s very important for kids to look their best. I feel that whenever kids look good, they feel good. And when they feel good, great things happen. And it just helps with their self-esteem.”

The event will run until 5 p.m. in the Science Hill High School CTE Building (251 Cotty Jones Lane, Johnson City).
