Falcons usher in fall sports

JOHNSON CITY — Volunteer High School ushered in fall sports with its media day on Monday. Two days later, its golf teams launched into preseason action.

Volunteer senior Austin Williams shot a 75 to finish in a tie for third with West Ridge’s Jayden Foster on Wednesday in the District 1-AA jamboree at Pine Oaks Golf Course.

Volunteer’s Jackson McLain came in right behind them at 76 to finish fourth. The Falcons got an 83 from Cameron Cox, a 92 from Brock Collier, and a pair of 93s from Aiden Miller and Kain Cornett to finish fifth overall — just two strokes out of third place.

On the girls’ side, Zetta Smith led Volunteer with a 101. Josie Sewell shot 111 and Kathryn Geise 116. The Lady Falcons finished sixth in the team standings.

A new format for the jamboree pitted same-seeded players in head-to-head scoring.

The Falcons will open the regular season on their home course of Bays Mountain Golf Club. They will play David Crockett on Aug. 7 at 4 p.m.

Cherokee, which competes in District 2-AA golf alongside Cocke County, Grainger, Greeneville, Jefferson County, Morristown East, Morristown West, Northview Academy, Sevier County and Seymour, opens its varsity season on Aug. 5 at the Morristown Invitational Tournament.

Both Volunteer and Cherokee will participate in a junior varsity tournament on July 30 at McDonald Hills in Rogersville.
