SMITHFIELD — The county and many of its towns are asking their customers to go easy on the water.
“We ask that customers employ voluntary water conservation measures to limit nonessential water use,” the county said in a news release.
With no rainfall of late, “irrigation usage in the county has created above-normal water demands,” the news release stated, “and some of the county’s main purchase supply sources are temporarily limited.”
The county reminded water customers of Johnston’s year-round conservation policy. “The policy allows for alternate-day irrigation for in-ground irrigation systems and hose-end sprinklers based on the customer’s address,” the county said. “Odd number street addresses are allowed to water on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, while even number street addresses are allowed to water on Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays.”
“No irrigation is allowed on Mondays,” the county added. “Pool-filling days should correspond with allowed irrigation days.”
Clayton and Kenly were among the Johnston towns following the county’s lead in asking customers to limit their water use.
“Due to the current weather conditions, we are asking for your cooperation in conserving water,” the Town of Clayton said. “Please employ voluntary water conservation measures and limit nonessential water use.”
The town offered the following tips for conserving water:
• Fix any leaks in your home promptly.
• Take shorter showers and consider using a water-saving showerhead.
• Run your dishwasher and washing machine only with full loads.
