Paws for Reading returns this month

The Johnston County Board of Commissioners has proclaimed July 15-19 Summer Learning Week.
The week stresses the importance of keeping kids learning throughout the summer so they’ll return to school ready to succeed.
Throughout the week, Johnston’s Read to Grow program will hold several Paws for Reading events. Children up to 8 years old can adopt a stuffed animal, take home a new book and promise to read for 20 minutes a day during the summer.
More than 250 children attended Paws for Reading events last year. Here’s this summer’s schedule:
July 15 — Kenly Public Library, 205 E. Edgerton St., 2-4 p.m.
July 16 — Public Library of Johnston County and Smithfield, 305 E. Market St., 10-11 a.m.; Four Leaf Clover, 312 W. Woodall St., Benson, 11 a.m.-noon; Princeton Public Library, 106 N. Center St., 9-10 a.m.; and My Kid’s Club, 609 N. Pollock St., Selma, 9:30-10:30 a.m.
July 17 — Mary Duncan Public Library, 100 W. Main St., Benson, 10-11 a.m.; and Partnership for Children Park, 600 Booker Dairy Road, Smithfield, 10-11 a.m.
July 18 — Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library, 100 S. Church St., Clayton, 3-4 p.m.; and the Sarah Yard Community Center, 909 E. Lee St., Smithfield, 3-4 p.m.
July 19 — Johnston Court Apartments, South Bright Leaf Boulevard, Smithfield, 11:30-12:30 p.m.
July 20 — Raiford Street Park, 808 S. Raiford St., Selma, 11:30–12:30 p.m.
Each event will have a guest speaker, such as Smithfield Councilman Marlon Lee and former Princeton mayor Don Rains.
