“Smiling at Grief” is available on Amazon.

Johnston County resident Carol L. Dougherty has penned “Smiling at Grief: A Sapphic Romance” during Pride Month.

Can an opening night encounter ignite an unexpected love?

Kate sparks an instant connection with Pen, fueled by mutual attraction and a shared passion for the theater. Through fiery, intense rehearsal rooms and double-edged banter, Pen is forced to confront challenges of the past and present and redefine her art to try desperately to win the woman she loves.

In the world of stage lights and theater magic, Pen’s story unfolds in her own voice, inviting readers into the unguarded intimacy of her life onstage and off.

Dougherty has worked in professional theater with the Berkshire Theater Festival, the Three Rivers Shakespeare Festival and City Theatre Co. Her other books include “The Santiago Inheritance,” a political thriller, and “How Full of Briers: The Organizational Structure of the Non-Profit Theatre Corporation.” She was co-editor, with Gail Provost Stockwell, of “100 Ways to Improve Your Writing” by Gary Provost.
