Newton Municipal Airport Taxiway Project Officially Finished
A $2.5 million-plus taxiway relocation and reconstruction project at the Newton Municipal Airport is officially finished. The Newton City Council has confirmed the new parallel taxiway has been substantially completed in compliance with the terms of the contract they approved on May 17, 2021. Con-Struct Incorporated of Marshalltown won the project with a bid of $2.69 million. Newton City staff says the final cost was well under that price, despite the addition of a $52,536 change order. The total cost ended up at $2,521,868. Ninety percent of that will be reimbursed to the City by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The 2021 Airport Improvement Program (AIP) for the Newton Municipal Airport included the design and reconstruction of the parallel taxiway at the north end of the airfield, to meet FAA requirements. The project also removed a portion of the old taxiway at the northwest end of the airport, and relocated it to be aligned with the remaining taxiway that extends southeast. Clappsaddle-Garber Associates of Marshalltown prepared plans and specifications for the project.
