JONESBOROUGH, Tenn. (WJHL) – This summer has been all about continuing to build around a youthful foundation for David Crockett football.

Four more Vols taken on Day 2 of 2024 MLB Draft

The program battled in a tough, new-look Region 1-5A in 2023, finishing with a record of 3-7. The lone region victory came at home against Cocke County.

Head coach Hayden Chandley told News Channel 11 last week that he loves the group they have assembled this year. The one thing they do lack, however, is experience.

Chandley has just nine seniors and eight juniors on the roster. The rest of the group is all underclassmen, including more than 20 sophomores.

“We’re very young, but we’re also very talented,” senior linebacker and tight end Thad Estep said. “Everybody works hard. We have what it takes.”

“They don’t have the experience that an older team would, but they’re willing to learn,” Chandley added. “Coaches have done a good job pouring into them. They’ve got some talent, so we’ve got to do a good job making sure we’re putting them in the right positions at an early age. They just got to learn a little bit quicker.”

The Pioneers will open the season at home against South Greene on August 23.
