JOPLIN, MO – Former Missouri Southern Lion Rajindra Campbell will compete in the Olympics in just a few weeks. Despite his recent success, Campbell would still overcome many obstacles in his journey to Paris.

At 6’2″ and 290lbs, some may think Campbell belongs on the gridiron, but it’s the sport of shot put that’s made him a 2024 Olympian. Campbell will be representing his home country, Jamaica, on the world’s biggest stage.

“I’ve actually never played football,” said Campbell.

“A lot of people thought I’d make a great football player, but track & field is where my passion is at. I’m glad I decided to stick with the sport, though, I’m super proud to call myself an Olympian.”

Spending three seasons with the Lions, Campbell would dominate in field events. The MSSU alum’s success would carry over to Jamaica, where he would win a national title in 2023. Campbell’s story, however, wouldn’t start without its challenges.

“My first time competing was in front of a crowd of around 40,000,” said Campbell.

“I crumbled. Being in high school, that’s a ton of people to perform in front of, and it was the biggest audience I’ve ever had.”

Several years later, he’s bound for the Olympics in Paris. Campbell credits two of his biggest heroes: his brother Roderick and his coach Brian Allen.

“Coach Allen and my brother really encouraged me,” Campbell said.

“Last year when I threw a 22, I felt I really had a chance to compete and could realize my dreams.”

With the games quickly approaching, the excitement is starting to set in, but for Campbell, nothing comes close to the chance of winning gold.

“I don’t even know what I would do if I were to win,” said Campbell.

“I would be so honored, and it would be amazing. Just thinking about winning makes me excited.”

Campbell will head to Budapest to participate in one more competition before the Olympic games begin in Paris. The opening ceremony for the Olympic games begins on Friday, July 26th.
