Rain Chances this Evening Brings Relief from the Heat

It has been really hot this week, but we have some relief for the weekend.

    Drought Tracker:

    • After little to no rainfall for most of the week, and above average temperatures, our drought tracker shows most of the region slipping into those drier conditions.
    • No county is in worse conditions, which is a good thing, but we have one to two more months of little rainfall and above average temperatures.

    Day 1 SPC Outlook:

    • Thankfully, we have a weak cold front moving through bringing some isolated thunderstorms in the southern counties.
    • We have a low risk for any severe storm threat, but you may expect some lightning and thunder.

    Future Track:

    • These storms will mainly be along and south of I-44 and in Oklahoma.
    • Most of the rain will be holding off until after midnight and continuing until about 5-6 AM.

    Humidity Levels Friday:

    • After the frontal boundary passes, temperatures only drop a couple of degrees.
    • Our high temperature Friday is forecasted to get up to 93°F in Joplin, but humidity levels will be much lower then earlier this week.
    • Much of the area sees less than 40% humidity in the afternoon, which lowers the heat index tremendously.

    Heat Index Friday:

    • On Friday, the heat index is right around the actual temperature for most of the counties.
    • Actual temperature for our area will be in the low to mid 90s, and the heat index remains in the low to mid 90s.
    • It is still going to be pretty hot, just not nearly as dangerous as previously in the week.

    10 Day Forecast:

    • The lower humidity and seasonable temperatures only stay around average for the weekend.
    • It does not take long for the heat to creep back in, and were back to seeing triple digit temperatures and heat indices by mid week next week.
    • We do have some rain chances in the forecast, tonight we will get some rain mainly south of Joplin.
    • Next chance of widespread rain won't be until next weekend.
    • It is August now, and we are seeing those dangerously hot and humid conditions, stay hydrated out there folks!
