Miami's Surfside condo collapses. Search and rescue efforts at full strength.

Miami-Dade search and rescue team looks for residents of Champlain Towers SouthMiami Herald (individual unknown)

Around 2 a.m. on Thursday, June 24th 2021 the south side of a 12-story tower located in the Surfside neighborhood of Miami-Dade collapsed. The cause for the partial collapse of the oceanfront condo Champlain Towers is unknown.

Local engineers believe the original construction didn't have concrete designed for salt water which allowed it to penetrate and eat away at the reinforcing bar. There had been construction teams onsite over the past month working on the roof. This will also be examined as a possible cause.

A Miami-Dade fire rescue dog found a boy underneath rubble in the parking garage. It is believed the child may have been with his parents who are now deceased, but that's yet to be confirmed.

While more than 70 of the units have been destroyed, it is believed more residents are missing as the search and rescue missions persist.

About Champlain Towers

The condo was built in 1981 and consists of 3 parts, South, North, and East. It's 136 units consist of one, two, three and four bedroom floor plans as large as 4,500 square feet. A 4/4 penthouse recently sold for $2.8 mil and it was state of the art despite the overall age of the building. Amenities are basic by today's standards, but still include a heated pool, hot tub and gym. The master bathrooms are known for being luxurious and spacious and a majority of the units allowed for views of the Atlantic Ocean.
