    Vote now: Who are the J&C Athletes of the Week for May 20-25?

    LAFAYETTE — IHSAA track and field and tennis regional championships took place while softball sectional championships were contested and the first round of baseball playoffs took center stage in the Lafayette area.

    It's time to honor the top performances by recognizing four top male and female Athletes of the Week candidates for May 20-25.

    Fans and readers can vote an unlimited number of times until Thursday when polls close at noon. Here are the male and female Athlete of the Week candidates.

    Sammy Swank, McCutcheon baseball

    The sophomore pitching ace for McCutcheon dotted the strike zone and kept his poise during the IHSAA 4A Sectional Semifinals against three-time defending champion Harrison. Swank threw a complete game with 12 strikeouts and navigated the Mavericks to a 1-0 win last Saturday.

    Finley Huber, Harrison track and field

    Huber won the 200 meters in 21.64 seconds at the IHSAA Regional Championships and took second in the 100 meters in 10.78, narrowly finishing second behind Townsend Marcus of Avon by six thousandths of a second last Thursday. Huber advanced to the IHSAA State Championship meet at Indiana University and will lead the Raiders in the 100 meters, 200 meters, 4x100 meter relay and 4x400 relay.

    Jarrod Kirsch, North Montgomery baseball

    Kirsch drove in three runs and went 4-for-8 at the plate to lead North Montgomery to the IHSAA Sectional 3A Championship game on Monday against Twin Lakes. Kirsch led the Chargin' Chargers to a 16-3 victory over West Lafayette in the first round last Wednesday and an 8-7 win against Western in the semifinals last Thursday.

    Kaden Patton, Crawfordsville baseball

    Patton went 2-for-3 and laced a double with two RBIs to lead the Athenians over Tri-West Hendricks 3-2 in the IHSAA Class 3A Semifinals in Danville.

    Ruth Moser, Harrison track and field

    Moser was among four athletes who qualified for the IHSAA State Track and Field Championships on Friday at Indiana University. Moser ran the 300 hurdles in 45.86 seconds during the IHSAA Regional Championships at Lafayette Jeff last Tuesday.

    Taylor Woods, West Lafayette track and field

    Woods qualified for the IHSAA State Championship after finishing second in the discus with a distance of 124 feet and two inches last Tuesday. Woods began throwing discus as an activity to help alleviate the tendinitis she suffered in her knees while playing volleyball.

    Allie Elliott, Rossville softball

    Elliott showed remarkable poise for a freshman with the game on the line tied 2-2 with Clinton Central in the IHSAA Class 1A Sectional Championship. Elliott scored the winning run to lead the Hornets to repeat as sectional champions. Rossville plays Riverton Parke at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

    Hadessah Austin, Seeger track and field

    The senior long-distance runner punched her ticket to state after finishing second in the 3,200 meters last Tuesday. Austin ran the nearly 2-mile race in 11:01.08.
