WEST LAFAYETTE — McCutcheon forwards Chloe Finney, Katie Wilson and Aaliyah McLean created space against bottlenecking pressure from the West Lafayette defense.

The ball moved evenly between Finney, Wilson and McLean with Finney benefitting from steady passing, one-touches and a complete control over a rebuilding program in West Lafayette.

Finney scored two goals in the seventh and 47th minutes as McCutcheon cruised past West Lafayette 2-0.

McLean assisted on the first goal while senior defender Kalea Washington set Finney up for her second goal for McCutcheon (1-1) as it captured its first win of 2024.

"Our communication was really good tonight," Finney said. "We played a lot of different positions and mixed everyone around. But everyone talked and we were able to connect with each other which is the key to winning."

West Lafayette (1-1) struggles became worse when senior defender Allison Creech went down with an ankle injury in the second half and missed the rest of the game.

Creech's sister Megan stepped into take one of the defender spots as West Lafayette tried reverting McCutcheon's attack. Senior goalkeeper Bree Johnson made 10 saves.

Johnson played behind now graduated goalkeeper and three-sport All-Area athlete Adrienne Tolen and earned her first shutout 4-0 over Northwestern last Saturday."

"I know (Johnson) is a little bit nervous stepping into that varsity starter role but you could never tell by the way she played," West Lafayette coach Jocelyn Cavalier said. "I'm super happy with both performances this week."

Simple passes from the defense to midfield opened lanes for McCutcheon before the strength of Finney allowed her to attack through multiple Red Devils players and score.

Football from West Lafayette who had finished practice created a loud atmosphere at West Lafayette's soccer field.

"It's good to see people come and support girls soccer," Finney said. "All the talking hypes us up and it's fun to give them a show."

McCutcheon hosts Central Catholic next Wednesday at 6 p.m. West Lafayette travels to Kankakee Valley next Tuesday at 7 p.m.
