LAFAYETTE — Harrison, West Lafayette-McCutcheon and Central Catholic were among numerous teams who had to either cancel or postpone high school football games due to thunder and lightning storms during Week 2 Friday night games.

"It doesn't happen very often," West Lafayette coach Shane Fry said during a delay at Ellison Field where the Red Devils were scheduled to play McCutcheon. "I've been coaching for 21 years and this was probably the fourth time we didn't play on Friday night. It doesn't happen often."

West Lafayette and McCutcheon will play its game Saturday at 5 p.m. after deciding to call delay the game at 9:45 p.m. Harrison hosts Plainfield and Delphi hosts Twin Lakes at 11 a.m. and Faith Christian plays at Clinton Central at 7 p.m.

Central Catholic stopped play with Cardinal Ritter while holding a 10-0 lead with 4:27 in the first quarter. That game was canceled and ruled a no-contest.

"It's one of those unfortunate things and God had other plans for our contest this evening," Central Catholic coach Brian Nay said. "Ritter being down in Indianapolis and having some difficulties making the travel back up tomorrow, we had to do what was right for everybody involved. And that means moving onto week three."

Saturday now creates a bottleneck of football excitement with Purdue set to kickoff simultaneously while teams like Harrison, Delphi and Twin Lakes will play in much better weather conditions.

"It becomes a little challenging with the Purdue game and a lot of coaches will want to go to the game," Fry said. "But we also have a game so you kind of have you do that tomorrow and then get ready to play a game tomorrow."

McCutcheon coach Josh Strasser shared his perspective on hosting a home game delayed to Saturday.

"We got a lot of people who will be watching a lot of good games tomorrow whether that's high school or college," Strasser said. "It's going to be a different day and we prefer not to play on a Saturday. That's why we waited as long as we could but the weather didn't break in enough time for us to get out there."
