WEST LAFAYETTE − If you're intrigued by the shoes some Purdue football players are wearing in Saturday's season opener, you're not alone.

What started as a pair of custom cleats Alex Andrews painted for former Purdue cornerback Hayden Ellinger caught the attention of Ellinger's then teammate and current Pittsburgh Steelers safety Cory Trice.

"People saw it and it just caught on," Andrews said. "It just grew from there and players just started ordering them. The word just spread around and people started DM'ing (direct messaging) me and asking if I could do their shoes."

Andrews' work has been highlighted on the biggest stages when Lance Jones wore shoes Andrews created at his A22 Customs shop in downtown Lafayette during the NCAA Tournament run to the national title game, and when San Francisco 49ers cornerback Darrell Luter Jr. wore shoes Andrews painted for the Super Bowl.

Several Purdue football players are wearing shoes Andrews, a Purdue graduate, painted for today's game.

Among them: Markevious Brown, CJ Smith ( who is out for the Indiana State game ), CJ Madden, Arhmad Branch, Marcus Mbow, Derrick Rogers Jr., Dillon Thieneman, Jayden Dixon-Veal, Joe Strickland, Antonio Stevens, Mahamane Moussa, Hudson Card and Devin Mockobee.
