Elmwood/Brimfield pole vaulter sets IHSA record on way to state championship

CHARLESTON — Elmwood/Brimfield junior Mya Strahm had a record-setting day at the Illinois High School Association girls track and field state finals.

Strahm cleared 14 feet, 1.25 inches (4.3 meters) to win the Class 1A state championship, setting the state mark for all classes and topping her own all-time Peoria-area record.

This is the second consecutive state championship for Strahm, who is committed to Tennessee .

After securing the Illinois title, Strahm took aim at this season's national mark of 14-5 held by Hannah Grace of Coastal Christian (N.C.). Strahm missed her three chances at 14-5.25. Strahm's mark sits at third in the nation this season behind Grace and unattached vaulter Jathiyah Muhammad (14-4).

According to the National Federation of High Schools, the all-time national high school mark in girls pole vault is 14-11.75 — set last year by Hana Moll of Capital High School in Olympia, Washington.
