    What are the pitch count rules for the IHSA baseball playoffs?

    The Illinois High School Association baseball playoffs are in full swing. Class 1A and 2A teams are at the sectional level, while Class 3A and 4A are set to begin regional play this week.

    Things start to get tricky for coaches when it comes to the IHSA rules on pitch counts . Who is going to pitch? How should an ace be kept in with a lead? When can our ace pitch again?

    Starting in August 2016, the IHSA baseball advisory committee adapted pitch count guidelines for both the regular season and postseason. Here is what you need to know about high school baseball pitch counts in Illinois.

    What is the pitch count for IHSA playoffs?

    Below is the general guide coaches use to determine how many pitches an athlete can throw and how long they must rest after. For the full pitch count sliding scale , which explains how many pitches an athlete can throw in his following game, go to ihsa.org .

    • If a pitcher throws 1-30 pitches, he is eligible to pitch the next day.
    • If a pitcher throws 31-45 pitches, he is eligible to pitch after one day of rest.
    • If a pitcher throws 46-60 pitches, he is eligible to pitch after two days of rest.
    • If a pitcher throws 61-75 pitches, he is eligible to pitch after three days of rest.
    • If a pitcher throws 76-115 pitches, he is eligible to pitch after four days of rest.

    How many pitches can a pitcher throw in a high school game?

    Here is an example of the IHSA pitch count rule this season: Illini Bluffs senior right-hander Josh Vaughn threw 89 pitches in Saturday's Class 1A regional championship game, striking out 18 in the one-hitter victory. The earliest the Bradley recruit could throw again would be Thursday. IB's next scheduled game is a 4:30 p.m. Wednesday sectional semifinal against Jacksonville Routt, meaning Vaughn is not eligible to pitch that game. If the Tigers win, he can pitch the sectional championship scheduled for Saturday.

    Is there a pitch count limit in high school?

    One player can throw 115 pitches in a single game. During the regular season, pitchers are only allowed to throw 105 pitches in a single game.

    Does IHSA softball have a pitch count?

    There are no pitch count restrictions on high school softball pitchers, per the National Federation of State High School Associations. The NFHS has not found injury data that supports setting a limit for fastpitch softball pitchers, who deliver the ball underhanded. Baseball pitchers throw overhand.
