A 9-month-old infant died in Peoria last month from fentanyl intoxication, according to autopsy results released Friday by the Peoria County Coroner’s Office . The manner of death has been ruled a homicide.

Last month, the Peoria Police Department received a 911 call for an infant, identified as Kaine Santana H. Wolford, who was unresponsive and not breathing at about 12:20 a.m. on July 26.

Wolford was transported to OSF HealthCare Saint Francis Medical Center in Peoria, where he was pronounced dead at 1:29 a.m.

Wolford’s mother, Zenai Denise Lashayla Wolford, 19, of Peoria, was arrested after Peoria police entered her home and found a small plastic bag that had been nibbled on in the infant’s crib. The bag contained one or two pills believed to be MDMA, or ecstasy, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Terry Muench.

Zenai Wolford has been charged with endangering the life and health of a child and will be arraigned Aug. 29 in Peoria County Circuit Court. She faces up to 10 years in prison.

The case remains under investigation by the Peoria Police Department.
