A Peoria couple was arrested Thursday on animal cruelty charges after police found a large group of dogs malnourished and kept in poor conditions at their home.

Eileen Wood, 60, and Kevin W. Schuch, 54, were arrested and charged with 27 counts of cruel treatment of animals and violation of homeowner duties under the Humane Care for Animals Act after 27 dogs were found in poor conditions at a home in the 2800 block of West Meidroth Street on Thursday morning.

The Peoria Police Department said that at 8:47 a.m., they responded to the home in response to a welfare check. Upon arrival, they found the dogs in the basement, extremely malnourished and kept in conditions that were not considered livable.

Police then entered the home, where they meet Wood and Schuch, who were eventually taken into custody. Both are currently being held at the Peoria County Jail , with a hearing on pre-trial release conditions set for today at 3 p.m.

The dogs were taken by animal control to Peoria County Animal Protection Services for treatment.
