    2024-09-01

    The days are getting shorter.

You are probably noticing the decrease in sunlight as we transition from summer to fall. Soon, we will be due for a time change . Here's what to know

When does daylight saving time start?

Daylight saving time begins the second Sunday of March and ends the first Sunday of November. In 2024, clocks were set forward one hour at 2 a.m. March 10, according to the U.S. Naval Observatory.

When does daylight saving time end?

Daylight saving time will end 2 a.m. Nov. 3, when clocks will be set back one hour to standard time. U.S. clocks will “spring ahead” for 2025 at 2 a.m. March 9.

What does daylight saving time mean?

The Oxford Dictionary defines daylight saving time as “time as adjusted to achieve longer evening daylight in summer by setting the clocks an hour ahead of the standard time.”

Will we ever shift to permanent daylight saving time?

In the U.S., Congress has been kicking that one around since 2018 when U.S. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Florida) introduced the Sunshine Protection Act. The measure would make daylight saving time permanent, meaning the time would no longer change twice a year. Congressional records show the U.S. Senate passed a 2021 iteration of the bill in 2022, but no iteration has passed in the U.S. House of Representatives.

European nations are also mulling over the idea of eliminating the biannual time change, according to the Council of the European Union (EU). In 2018, the European Commission (EC) tabled a proposal to end the seasonal clock changes in the EU. Six years later, the current system remains in place as the EC has taken no action on the proposal, and there is currently no defined timeline for a decision.

How did daylight saving time start?

According to timeanddate.com, Germany was the first country to apply daylight saving time on a national level, setting their clocks one hour forward on April 30, 1916. The town of Thunder Bay, Ontario was the first community in the world to use DST, implementing it as far back as 1908.

According to National Public Radio, the United States implemented daylight saving time with the passage of the Standard Time Act of 1918. The measure was a wartime effort to conserve energy resources by adding more daylight hours.

Benjamin Franklin often gets credit for the concept of daylight saving time because of a satirical 1784 letter he published in the Journal de Paris suggesting Parisians could economize on candles by rising an hour earlier.

When is the shortest day of the year in 2024?

The winter solstice marks the 24-hour period that will have the fewest hours of daylight . In Illinois, the 2024 winter solstice will occur at 2:21 a.m. Dec. 21, according to the Royal Museums Greenwich. The winter solstice was a time for pagan festivals in many cultures, and under the Julian Calendar, the event occurred Dec. 25.
