Peoria's WEEK-TV will be looking for a new journalist to anchor its morning newscast.

Jon Schoenheider announced on social media Friday that he would be leaving the station, effective Sept. 12, following five years as a producer, reporter and anchor. He became the primary morning anchor for the station in 2023, the first time in the station's 70-year history that someone moved from producer all the way up to anchor.

Schoenheider said that he would enjoy the time he still had left in central Illinois, while also hinting at more stories to come in the two weeks he still has left at the NBC affiliate.

"There's a lot more information I'd like to share, including one more investigation in the works, and it will give me a chance to say a proper goodbye to you all," Schoenheider said. "Until then, I'm going to enjoy the time I have left here in Central Illinois, and make a few more memories with the amazing team I’m fortunate to work with every day."

Schoenheider came to WEEK straight out of college in 2019, after graduating from Hope College in Holland, Michigan. While he was in school, he worked for WGN-TV in Chicago as a producer for " Backstory ," a show that examines the history of the city and tells the stories of those who had an up-close view at major events.

After graduating, he became a producer at WEEK, working 10 p.m. newscasts as a producer for HOI ABC before working on its morning show. Schoenheider began reporting for the station in January 2022, also doing some anchoring work at HOI before taking over as a weekend anchor full time.

His move to WEEK's morning show came in March 2023, and he has worked in that capacity for the last 17 months.

Schoenheider's co-anchor, Rashaun Haynes, is expected to remain at the station.
