Update: House fire in Galesburg leaves man and child dead; victims identified

A house fire in Galesburg early Friday morning has left a 6-year-old girl and a 50-year-old man dead.

Kaiirree J. Hippen, 6, and John E. Stipp, 50, died at OSF HealthCare St. Mary's Hospital after fire crews found them inside a home in the 500 block of North Cherry Street around 3:20 a.m.

The Galesburg Fire Department said that they were called to the scene of a structure fire at that time, enlisting the help of all three stations and each of the 11 personnel on duty.

Fire chief Randy Hovind said that when firefighters arrived on scene, they noticed heavy smoke and flames coming from the back of a two-story home. When fire crews came inside to begin fighting the blaze, they saw the girl and the man in the home and removed them before they were transported to St. Mary's.

A family dog, along with eight other people, made it out and were also transported to St. Mary's for further evaluation.

Fire crews used multiple attack lines to combat the fire on the inside and outside of the home, with off-duty personnel called in on an emergency basis to help with the response. GFD estimates that $30,000 worth of damage was done to the home, with the damage concentrated on the second floor and attic.

The American Red Cross is assisting with providing resources to those who were displaced by the fire. Fire and police investigators in Galesburg, along with the Illinois State Fire Marshal and Illinois State Police, are still investigating what led to the fire.
