What does SB164 want to accomplish?

SB164 updates the rules for keeping kids safe in cars in Oklahoma.

    Here’s what it changes:

➡️Car Seats for Young Kids: Children under 8 years old must be secured in a special car seat that is right for their age and size. Younger kids need to be in rear-facing or forward-facing car seats depending on what’s safest for them.

➡️Seat Belts for Older Kids: Children who are 8 years old or older must use a seat belt.

➡️Fines for Not Following the Rules: If a driver doesn’t have a child 8 years or older properly buckled up, they could get a fine.

➡️Exceptions: Emergency vehicles are not included in these new rules.

Overall, this law aims to make sure all kids are safely restrained in cars to protect them during travel.

Who will benefit from this new law?

✔️Children: They will be safer while traveling in vehicles because they will be properly restrained in car seats or seat belts, which can help prevent injuries in case of an accident.

✔️Parents and Caregivers: They will have clear guidelines on how to properly secure children in cars, making it easier to ensure their kids are safe.

✔️Drivers: By following the law, drivers can avoid fines and potential legal issues, and they will contribute to overall road safety.

✔️Emergency Responders: With clearer regulations, emergency responders will have fewer complications related to child passenger safety during accidents.

✔️Law Enforcement: Police will have updated rules and penalties to enforce, which can help improve compliance and safety on the roads.

Overall, the law helps protect children and supports drivers and caregivers in ensuring proper safety measures are in place.

What are some concerns people might have about this law?

⚠️Increased Costs for Families: Families may need to buy new car seats or seat belts that meet the updated requirements, which could be expensive.

⚠️Potential for Fines: Drivers might face fines if they don’t properly secure older children or if they make mistakes about what type of restraint is needed.

⚠️Confusion Over Requirements: Parents and caregivers might find it confusing to understand and comply with the new rules, especially if they are not familiar with the latest safety guidelines.

⚠️Impact on Emergency Vehicles: The law might not apply to emergency vehicles, which could create inconsistencies in safety practices.

⚠️Burden on Enforcement: Law enforcement officers may have to spend more time checking and enforcing these new rules, which could strain their resources.

This bill is making its way through the legislative process. When introduced, it was set to go into effect at the end of 2023. It remains in committee.

how in the world is this a burden?the only thing that has changed is oklahoma is finally making it the law for anyone 8+ to buckle up if riding in the backseat. We are the only state who doesn't have any vehicle laws regarding our kids' safety once they turn 8 years old. This has been long overdue!
