California says it lost $2 billion in state income taxes from earners leaving
(The Center Square) - California’s Legislative Analyst’s Office says the state lost approximately $2.3 billion in state personal income taxes due to outmigration in the 2022-2023 fiscal year. With Newsom claiming the state's population grew in 2023, the net decrease in taxpayers and taxpayer dependents for fiscal year 2022-2023 suggests California could be losing productive individuals and their families as it gains non-tax-filers. “Recently released figures from the IRS show that California continues to lose taxpayers to other states at a heightened rate that began...

Padres Strike Early, Sweep Reeling Pirates, Losers of 10 in Row
The Padres scored eight runs in the first three innings Wednesday, making a bad situation almost hopeless for the struggling Pirates, who dropped their 10th straight. The 8-2 win also drew the Friars closer to the Dodgers, as L.A. fell 5-4 in Milwaukee. They, along with Arizona, trail L.A. by 2.5 games in the National League West, while sharing a 4.5-game lead in the wild-card race.
Padres’ trade deadline gambit has given them one of the best bullpens in baseball
While one can quibble over the strategy in itself, no one argued that the San Diego Padres didn't significantly improve their bullpen at the trade deadline. Adding Tanner Scott got most of the headlines as he was arguably the best reliever available on the trade market, but Bryan Hoeing was also in that trade and is a really solid and controllable reliever that can throw multiple innings. On top of that, the Padres managed to trade some underperforming (but talented) prospects in order to acquire Jason Adam.
