Turn on Your Body's Fat-Burning Switch To Lose Weight Naturally

Imagine if our bodies had a built-in switch to speed up fat burning AND help us lose weight naturally? Well, it does! It’s called AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), and certain foods activate the switch, helping us lose weight naturally.
Our Energy Meter
To keep it simple, as Dr. Michael Greger explains in How Not To Diet, AMPK is like our body’s energy meter. When it detects low energy levels, it signals to our body to burn fat for fuel. It’s like a thermostat that kicks on the heat when it gets too cold. And certain foods help trigger this switch.
“It flips the switch in your body from storing fat to burning fat. That’s why AMPK is not only known as the master energy sensor in our bodies, but also as the fat controller. — Dr. Michael Gregor
Supercharging Weight Loss
As a certified holistic health coach, I know firsthand how much our diet impacts us emotionally, mentally, and physically. The impact is real. And one of the easiest ways to kickstart our metabolism is through the foods we eat — especially when we pick the right ones.
When I first started eating a more plant-based diet, I had more energy and my weight loss simply happened. I’d eat potatoes, tomatoes, and peppers, in marinara sauce or homemade potato wedges dipped in a spicyish pizza sauce. Delicious, simple, and natural weight loss-promoting foods.
In his book, Dr. Greger shows us howspecific whole foods help with weight loss. Eating a diet rich in whole foods isn’t hard or expensive. And it’s the key to boosting metabolism and natural weight loss.
It’s also simple to make part of our daily routine. I love making my own morning drink — it’s a moment I intentionally create each day for self-care. And one of my favorites is a matcha latte — and green tea (the base of matcha) just happens to activate AMPK (see? Effortless).
3 Superfoods for Fat Burning
1. Green Tea
Try green tea as a hot beverage, iced tea, or matcha latte. Matcha, a powdered form of green tea, can be mixed into smoothies, baked into foods, or whisked into hot water.
Suggested amount: 3–5 cups of green tea daily or 1–2 teaspoons of matcha powder.
Stay Hydrated: Water makes us feel full and helps keep our metabolism and appetite in check.
Prioritize Sleep: Set a goal of 7–9 hours of good sleep each night. When we skimp on sleep, our hormones go haywire, which can lead to storing more fat.
Strength Training: Building muscle boosts your metabolism and helps you burn more calories, even when you’re just relaxing.
Mindful Eating: Try stopping when you’re about 80% full and notice how you feel. Slow down and enjoy each bite.
Start with Small Changes: Try not to overwhelm yourself by making too many habit changes at once. Little steps add up to big changes.
3 Holistic Tips For Weight Loss
Take Breaks: When we take breaks throughout our day, we’re avoiding burnout. Try adding in a short walk, stretching, or a few minutes of deep breathing. Simple, calming moments of rest recharge us.
Move Daily: Yoga and pilates complement physical movement — for that mind-body connection.
Nurture Relationships: Spend time with friends and family (people you care about) and build your support system. This contributes to our emotional well-being and sense of belonging.
Final Thoughts
By combining AMPK-activating foods and fat-burning superfoods like green tea and hot peppers, you're creating a powerful, natural strategy for weight loss.
It doesn’t have to be all or nothing, start slowly. Making small, consistent changes over time makes all the difference.
