RALEIGH, N.C. – Area youth are invited to get a free backpack with school supplies at the Beta Lambda Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc.’s Operation BigBookBag backpack giveaway from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17,  under the small shelter in Anderson Point Park.

The event is hosted in partnership with the Beta Lambda Sigma Charitable Foundation and the Beta Lambda Sigma Philo Affiliate. In addition to the backpack giveaway, there will be games and books available for participating families provided by WAKE Up and Read. Backpacks will be available on a first come, first serve basis.

“Operation BigBookBag is the first major service project for the new sorority year and what better way to kick it off than by helping students begin their school year with the supplies they need for success,” said BLS Member Jamica Whitaker, committee chair for BLS’s Operation BigBookBag.

OperationBigBookBag was established in 1996 by the late Dr. LaRona J. Morris, 18th International Grand President of the sorority. OBBB is designed to address the needs, challenges and issues that face school-aged children. The program has expanded in recent years to focus on exposing students to STEM curriculum and careers, and a refocus on tutoring support and mentoring programs.

“Operation BigBookBag is an opportunity for us to support our community in a meaningful way that will have far-reaching impacts,” said Celeste Brown, president of the Beta Lambda Sigma Chapter. “Every child deserves the supplies they need to start their school year.”
