Social Finance launches Hawaiʻi Renewable Learning Fund
Social Finance has announced the launch of the Hawaiʻi Renewable Learning Fund, a sustainable tool that will offer zero-interest higher education loans to local students. The fund, with support from the Honolulu-based Harold K.L. Castle Foundation and other donors, launched a $2.5 million pilot program in partnership with the College of Engineering at the University of Hawai’i. The goal of the fund is to enable low-income students to enroll in and graduate from high-quality certificate and degree programs. It also will help build a pipeline of local skilled talent to fill in-demand jobs across the state. Students who secure positions earning more than $50,000 after graduation will repay their loans back into the fund to support future students.
Danielle “Duckie” Irwin to represent Hawaii at Mrs. Pacific Islands
HONOLULU (HI Now) - Danielle “Duckie” Irwin, the president of nonprofit Makaha Learning Center and Chief Strategy Officer for Hawaii Unified Industries, was recently announced as Mrs. Pacific Islands 2024. “Duckie” Irwin will be the proud Hawaii representative at Mrs. International World’s in Kingsport, Tennessee in late July.
Lara Claydon and Scotty Fong take top honors at Ole Longboard Classic
Lara Claydon and Scotty Fong took top honors at the 30th annual Ole Longboard Classic, Saturday at Launiupoko Park. Claydon and Fong won the two biggest divisions, the Open Women and Open Men, with 30 and 36 competitors, respectively. More than 200 entries in 15 divisions were treated to a rising south swell that produced head-high waves.
