HONOLULU (KHON2) — A 21-year-old Kailua-Kona man, Alvin Godfrey Castro III, died in a two-vehicle collision in North Kona early Friday morning.

The crash was reported at 4:47 a.m. on Māmalahoa Highway, north of the 23-mile marker. It involved a green 2015 Subaru Forester, driven by a 40-year-old Hilo woman and a silver 2000 Acura Integra, driven by Castro.

According to HPD, the 40-year-old woman was driving southbound when she crossed a double solid yellow line in an attempt to pullover onto the mauka shoulder of the roadway due to there not being one on the makai side.

She ultimately collided head-on with Castro who was driving northbound.

Castro was transported to the North Hawaii Community Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 6:25 a.m.
