KALAMAZOO, Mich. (WOOD) — After receiving several complaints, Kalamazoo police are warning about a recent trend of people shooting water beads at individuals as they walk or drive down the street.

According to the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety, the trend of water beads, known as Orbeez, is new to Kalamazoo but has been happening in other cities in recent years.

Police said some of the toy water guns are modified to look like real firearms. If someone is caught firing or possessing these items unlawfully, they may be arrested for crimes including assault and battery, disturbing the peace, and facsimile firearm.

KDPS said it has recently received several complaints about these toy water guns.

On Wednesday, KDPS said a man was walking down N. Westnedge Avenue when he was hit in the face with an Orbeez. Officers were able to find the suspects, ages 12 and 14, and two toy water guns. A criminal case for assault and battery will be sent and reviewed by the Kalamazoo Prosecutor’s Office.

Last week, KDPS said two of these toy water guns were found during a traffic stop. The driver was also found to have illegally possessed a real firearm. The 20-year-old driver was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon and lodged at the Kalamazoo County Jail.

KDPS encourages the use of these toys only with other willing participants to avoid legal trouble and injuries.
