Two of Michigan’s most unique communities were built by none other than American architect Frank Lloyd Wright. In the 1940s, the architecture and design GOAT created Parkwyn Village , a community of Usonian homes in Kalamazoo, and he went on to build four of the five homes that comprise The Acres, a naturalistic enclave built in the 1950s on a 72-acre plot in Galesburg. Both neighborhoods highlight Wright’s creative genius via designs like the Curtis Meyer House and Winn House, the latter now up for grabs at $1.9 million with lots of quirky details and a rich history in tow.

The two-story Parkwyn Village residence at 2822 Taliesin Drive is a serene retreat with views of Little Asylum Lake. Created for Robert D. & Winifred L. Winn, it was the last to be built by Wright in Parkwyn Village, completing construction in 1950. Three bedrooms and bathrooms are spread across its open floor plan of almost 2,500 square feet, in addition to some FLW-designed furniture. You won’t find an infinity edge pool on the 2.38-acre property, but it does offer easy access to the lake, which is part of a 274-acre nature preserve.

Sky lights and a curved wall of windows ensures the sunroom is flooded with natural light.

Similar to the Eric & Pat Pratt house that’s part of The Acres development, the Winn House has a low-pitched roof and an abundance of windows, and the living room spaces in both homes are tucked away off the entrance with a fireplace and built-in shelves. Winn House differs from most of Wright’s Usonian-style builds, though, because of its two-floor layout.

Geometric patterns on the walls throughout the abode give it character, while the living room, dominated by a masonry fireplace, features Wright’s traditional brick-red floor along with custom furnishings. More Wright-designed furniture can be found in the sunroom, a curved space that stands out from the façade, with sky lights and a long ribbon of picture windows that put the area’s nature settings on display. The nearby kitchen, with updated wood cabinetry and a stainless steel countertop, is, by just about any standard, intimate in scale. “Too many cooks in the kitchen” is one phrase that comes to mind when viewing the space in the listing images.

    One of the light-filled bedrooms.

You’ll find two bedrooms on the ground level, including one with a trio of slim doorways that offer a unique perspective of the grounds. Another bedroom is situated on the lower level with its own en-suite bathroom. For entertaining, the covered outdoor patio offers prime seating space for catching up. But if you’re hoping to get a closer look at your local Bambi, the Asylum Lake Preserve nearby offers hiking trails frequented by deer and more. Fred Taber of Jaqua Realtors holds the listing.
