    155 laptops to be given to Lubbock students in need

    LUBBOCK, Texas — On Tuesday, 155 refurbished laptops will be distributed to Lubbock students in need provided by AT&T and Human-I-T to the Lubbock United Way and the Young Women’s Christian Association Lubbock.

    Distribution of the refurbished laptops to Lubbock students will be held on Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. at the YWCA Lubbock located at 6501 University Avenue. Only students who are already signed up and pre-registered will qualify.

    According to data from the U.S. Census Bureau, almost 2.8 million Texas households and 7 million people lack broadband access. Twenty-three percent of Texas are unable to attend online classes, see a healthcare provider remotely, fill out a job application online and more, said the release.

    Texas state Representative Dustin Burrows expressed, the distribution will help “bridge the digital divide for 155 students in Lubbock which is critical in our ever-connection society.” He added with their own computer students can more effectively navigate and use the many educational, economic and other tools and resources readily available online.

    Burrows said, “I greatly appreciate AT&T, Human-I-T, the Lubbock Area United Way and the YWCA Lubbock for their collaboration to support local students and help bridge the digital divide in this community.”

    Amanda McAfree, President and CEO, Lubbock Area United Way, said the organization is grateful to AT&T and Human-I-T for the refurbished laptops distributed to local students.

    “Having regular access to a computer is no longer a luxury in today’s society and we appreciate AT&T and Human-I-T for supporting our local students and their education,” McAfee thanked.

    YWCA Lubbock, CEO, Glenda Mathis said,”With these 155 computers, our students can submit homework, research information or complete assignments online.”

Ward added AT&T is proud to collaborate with organizations like the Lubbock area United Way, YWCA Lubbock and Human-I-T to help close the digital divide for local Lubbock students.
