Lubbock-based musicians gear up for Burk Bash, an annual “family reunion” of artists

LUBBOCK, Texas — Every Memorial Day Weekend, a group of musicians from Lubbock and surrounding areas catch up with one another and perform at a two-day event called Burk Bash.

“We call it a private party where everybody is invited,” Gypsy Jayne, the event’s facilitator said.

Burk Bash 2024 will take place Saturday, May 25 and Sunday May, 26 on a plot of land, the Burk family owns at 2359 Farm to Market Road 2458 in Justiceburg, Texas.

Brothers Mike and Jack Burk have hosted the event every memorial weekend for the past 25 years. Unfortunately, Jack passed away a few years ago but the event lives on, garnering musical greats who have known the Burks for a long time: John Sprott Blues Band, Eddie Beethoven Band, Jim Clack and more.

According to Jayne, what Burk Bash stands for is “art and creating a space where we all come together for the spirit of art. It’s not about money, it’s not about politics, it’s just about people coming together to be like ‘Hey I miss you, how are you?'”

On Friday, campsites and lodges at Lake Alan Henry open for eventgoers. Saturday is opening day; newcomer bands perform and showcase their talents, according to Jayne. Sunday is performance day for all the regulars, and attendees are fed both nights.

“We’ve got everyone coming out, including awesome new bands like Indego,” Jayne said, calling the event “the heart of the music of Lubbock.”

Burk Bash is a 21+ event. Wristbands can be purchased at the front gate, and all minors must be accompanied by a parent/guardian.
