Snyder boy has only one birthday wish after enduring almost twenty surgeries

SNYDER, Texas — 8-year-old Kaison Garza, from Snyder, has endured almost 20 surgeries throughout his life so far and has many more to come after being diagnosed with Spina Bifida, kidney problems and other health issues. This year, his family learned he would need surgery every six months for the rest of his life to prevent any further damage to his kidneys.

Despite the surgeries to come, Kaison is excited about his 9th birthday on August 31 and he only has one wish: birthday cards.

Back in 2020, communities from around the South Plains and even outside of Texas came together to send Kaison thousands of birthday cards when he turned five. He said it was the best day of his life and never forgot it.

“Every time he would see the mail lady come, he was running out there and she had the boxes of [the cards]. That was the most perfect thing for him. He was just so happy to go out there and get them,” Kaison’s mom, Traci Gutierrez said.

Gutierrez said the cards would really lift Kaison’s spirit this year, and any other support the community could provide would help the family immensely.
