LUBBOCK, Texas — Lubbock’s Parks and Recreation Department opened three brand new splash pads at Lubbock parks including Rodgers Park, Mae Simmons Park, and Maxey Park.

The three parks opened July 8 and since they have been open, officials say they have had good feedback.

“I’ve gotten calls, I’ve gotten emails but the best part is when I go out there we’ve gotten thank yous and people have really enjoyed it, especially that it’s free,” said District 1 councilwoman and mayor protem, Christy Martinez-Garcia.

The splash pads initially faced backlash following the closure of all the local city pools.

Chelsea Turner and her kids were out at Maxey Park enjoying the splash pad and said they have been enjoying it since it opened.

“We were a little hesitant at first because we weren’t sure how busy it was gonna be, and then we came and it was great. There’s plenty of rooms, there’s plenty of space for you and all of your kiddos, so don’t let that scare you away,” Turner said.

Turner said people of all ages can enjoy the splash pads as well.

“I mean, it’s fun for moms too, it’s not just for the kids. We get out there and walk around in the water with them to cool off and then we come and dry out and tan a little bit,” Turner said.

Martinez-Garcia said ARPA funds helped pay for the new splash pads and have allowed the city to have something new.

Martinez-Garcia said she has already received feedback that has been submitted on what citizens would like to see next.

“Folks have requested more seating areas…they want more benches because they’re so well attended that they get really full., people have had birthday parties this is wonderful to see that folks are being open-minded and giving it a chance,” Martinez-Garcia said.

As the summer winds down and months get colder, Martinez-Garcia said the splash pads will continue to be kept up with.

“We are doing everything to keep them fresh and maintained and really feel like it’s a great investment in our family and in our communities,” Martinez-Garcia said.

The splash pads include activation buttons that manage water consumption and only allow the splash pads to run when activated.

The splash pads will be open Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Mondays from 12:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.
