Clovis college went on lockdown after gunfire during home invasion

CLOVIS, N.M. — The Clovis Police Department said Julian Montoya, 43, was arrested after he was accused of breaking into a home and shooting at a resident, leading a nearby college to go into lockdown on Friday.

According to CPD, a resident in the 1800 block of College Park Drive called 911 and said someone broke into their home and started shooting. The caller was locked in their room and reported hearing up to 15 gunshots, according to police. A second person who lived in the same house also called 911, and was able to escape through the window and describe the suspect.

Police said Montoya, the suspect, ran towards Clovis Community College. Police said the school was placed under lockdown, and Montoya was found leaving the main entrance. Once Montoya was taken into custody, the lockdown was lifted.

According to police, investigators discovered Montoya was accused of breaking into the home by shattering a glass window. Police said there were 15 shell casings recovered from the home, and no one in the home was hurt by gunfire.

“[Montoya] was interviewed by Detectives and there is no motive or relation between him and the residents of the home,” a press release from CPD said.

Montoya was charged with Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon, Aggravated Burglary and Felon in Possession of a Firearm. As of Saturday, he remained in jail at the Curry County Detention Center with no bond.
