Officers were called to the 300 block of Cesar E. Chavez Drive around 8:18 a.m. on Tuesday, September 10, for reports of shots fired. Two people and a dog were found on the ground with gunshot wounds. Police said it was an isolated incident.

A man, identified as Angel Aleman, 55, was found dead, along with his dog named Monster. A woman, Lydia Hernandez, 47, was found alive and breathing, court documents stated. Hernandez was rushed to the hospital by EMS, where she was pronounced deceased.

A probable cause affidavit said witnesses were interviewed by law enforcement. A witness reported seeing two vehicles leave the area after the gunfire stopped. One vehicle was a white SUV, and one was a small gray SUV, court records stated. A witness also saw a man with a slender build run into the park after the shooting.

Surveillance video from the area showed the victims and their vehicle at the park before the shooting. Aleman and Hernandez were seen walking around the area of the vehicle. The gray SUV first approached from the west, then quickly drove towards the victim’s vehicle and stopped next to it abruptly. Court records stated two people approached the victims. The video showed one victim fell to the ground. The second victim ran to the first person and then fell to the ground.

Two different types of weapons of the same caliber were used in the shooting, court records said. Authorities later received an anonymous tip that said Justin Aleman killed both victims. Police tracked down Justin and his vehicle, a white Chevy Traverse. Police also discovered Justin’s brother, Joziah Aleman, owned a gray Hyundai Santa Fe. Investigators confirmed the vehicle was in the area of the crime scene after the shooting.

Authorities spoke with Justin, who admitted he was driving the white Chevy at the scene of the shooting. Justin also admitted to being at the scene before, during and after the shooting. He then requested an attorney.

Court documents said Joziah was also interviewed by investigators. Court records said Joziah told authorities he received a call from Justin, so he drove to the park “with the intent of engaging in a physical fight with their uncle.”

According to court records, Joziah gave information that indicated Justin shot both victims and their dogs. After providing that information, he also asked for an attorney.

Court records did not reveal what prompted the altercation. Both Justin and Joziah were arrested on September 13 and charged with two counts of Murder and one count of Cruelty to Non-livestock animals. As of Tuesday, they both remained at the Lubbock County Detention Center on bonds totaling more than $800,500 each.
