Lubbock, Texas — Two juniors at Roosevelt High School told EverythingLubbock.com that a cake can mean so much to them at that age, even for those younger than them.

The two girls are in the school’s Family, Career and Community Leaders of America and they want every kid to feel loved and celebrated on their birthday.

Lydia Salas and Miley Rogers said it does not take a lot to make a child’s birthday special with their kits, Salas said, “They are full of almost everything any kid would ever want. It’s just two ingredients with icing candles and some little decorations, and it’s for just a family just to celebrate a birthday.”

The Roosevelt High Juniors said it is to help their classmates’ families if times are tough for them, Rogers said, “And if they’re not able to provide a certain ingredient or a substitution, we are these birthday party kids that are just able to go without no costs.”

The kits include cake mix, icing and a can of soda, but their FCCLA teachers said not to mix it up with drinking it.

Regan Renteria said, “They’ve been able to do a little bit of research on just kind of the Internet and we’ve kind of played around about it in our culinary class with what can you substitute in place for the oil and the eggs? The girls found that you could use just a can of soda with the box cake mix, and it replaces the need for the eggs and the oil.”

Tabitha Hernandez said, “Well, when you’re from a low socioeconomic community, things like parties are just not essential to the budget sometimes. But, you know, all kids should be able to feel that importance and things like that. So we just want to be able to provide kids with those feelings and be able to feel like they’re special and have that special birthday.”

With the help of the community and the girls said they will be able to reach their goal of making 600 of these kits.

With the girls saying, “we want to make sure every kid has the best birthday possible with families having just already something set and just let’s go home, let’s go bake a cake, let’s go hang something up. You know, let’s put a candle that, you know, your kid’s going to want to at least blow out a candle and a cake and say, I had a birthday. It’s very memorable and fun to talk with kids.”

If you would like to donate any of the items to make these kits like cake mix, icing, disposable cake pans and sodas, donations be taken to Roosevelt High School’s main office located at 1406 County Road 3300.
