78-year-old Clovis woman shot and killed after answering front door

Clovis, N.M. — The Major Crimes Unit of the 9th Judicial District is investigating a homicide after Virginia Montoya, 78, was shot and killed at her home in Clovis Wednesday evening.

The Clovis Department responded to an emergency call from a resident in the 1300 block of Tarver Street around 6:53 p.m.

According to a press release from Clovis PD, the 80-year-old caller stated his wife [Montoya] had been shot as she answered her front door. When officers and Emergency Medical Services arrived at the scene they located Montoya and confirmed she had sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest.

Montoya was quickly rushed to Plains Regional Medical Center in Clovis where she succumbed to her injuries, said Clovis Police.

Police added, residents in the Tarver area were asked to review their home security camera systems in the event their systems captured any relevant images.
