LUBBOCK, Texas — Mya Johnson, a Texas Tech University senior, worked on finding a job to start her career as her December graduation date approached.

“It’s really important for me to start my job hunting now just so I know once I graduate I have a job lined up,” Johnson said.

Johnson mentioned at one point she was under the impression that since more students graduate in the spring, that it would be harder for her to find a job during the fall semester.

Allison McCain, Associate Director at Texas Tech University Career Center, explained why this was a misconception amongst some students.

“I think of so many people graduate in the spring. So, there’s probably the thought that you know, it’s going to be a hiring flood at that point but in reality, hiring ebbs and flows and you really can’t necessarily predict trends, but you know, when you have a little bit less competition, sometimes that does make things easier,” McCain said.

According to the University Career Center, 75% of students had a ‘First Destination’ by graduation which meant they had already landed a job or decided to go into higher education. Along with that, after about six months out, 90% of graduates had a job.

McCain gave her advice as to what students need to start doing.

“Start preparing your documents now as soon as you can, you want to start having some kind of preparation in place because truthfully you never know when you’re going to meet someone who might take you to that next level by helping you to network to get to a certain point. So really being ready at all times is going to be helpful,” McCain said.
