LUBBOCK, Texas — The Slaton Police Department released a statement on social media Thursday following a Friday house fire that left a family with nothing.

Slaton Police Chief, Ross Hester explained that during the fire, first responders could not get to the scene because roads were blocked off by “rubberneckers” and sightseers.

These sightseers caused first responders unnecessary delays in performing their duties. Hester added the property owners’ lives were greatly affected by the actions of others.

Moving forward, Hester said Slaton Police Officers will issue citations and even arrest individuals who interfere with first responder’s duties.

“Some of those same citizens who caused the traffic problems at the scene would be the same people demanding a quick response if their property was on fire and wanting the scene clear for first responders,” Hester said.

while the new chief is so quick to say that the citizens' rubber necking is what caused the delay of first responders, as a citizen of slaton with family that lives less than a block away from where this fire occurred, in ways it was a good thing that citizens were there. the only time I witnessed first responders being slowed was one of the police department vehicles had the intersection blocked and the officer from that vehicle was half a block away on foot and had to run. also when the lady owner of the home made it there, she collapsed. not one of the officers or city employees blocking that intersection offered to help her. it was some of the same citizens that the new chief wants to degrade. hey chief, want to call people out, learn to call your own employees out as well. they were rubber necking just as much
