AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Amarillo native Shandricka Reed is all about self-empowerment and second chances.

“It’s time to activate,” said Reed, founder and director of A New Lease On Life Ministry in Dallas. “Even if you made some poor choices and you made some bad decisions, we need you to know that, hey, pick up and let’s move forward.”

It’s the main focus of the upcoming Activate Conference, Friday, Aug. 30 and Saturday, Aug. 31 at New Covenant Missionary Baptist Church.

“Jesus practiced and the spiritual and the practicality of life. So he didn’t just talk Bible all day, or didn’t just talk the things of scripture all day. But he also worked with them in their areas of expertise, whether he talked tax law, whether he talked gardening, whether he talked fishing, whatever it was, how can you apply it to your life?,” Reed explained.

Reed told MyHighPlains.com that the conference is geared towards ladies ages 13 and up, with an opportunity for men to participate on Friday, Aug. 30. Reed noted that both days will discuss real-life issues faced by both men and women.

“You have different personalities in church, and we forget that we want to blanket people, and you have people that are so different. And so we’re touching everybody,” Reed expressed.

All of it is geared towards serving to unite the community through unconventional and practical lessons.

“You think about the different cartoons of superheroes and teams that come together with your powers,” said Julian Reese, Community Activist and one of the speakers at the event. “Like Captain Planet. You got the Transformers, everybody’s strong on their own, but when they truly come together, everything pulls where it needs to be, and then we’re able to really be powerful in that moment.”

Registration for the Activate Conference is $25, and you can do so here.
