WACO, TX (FOX 44)— For 25 years, high school students in Waco have served as a vital voice for their peers through the Waco Youth Council.

As an advisory board to the city council, the Youth Council offers positions for motivated students to help address and tackle youth-related issues within the community.

Open to all high school students residing in Waco and living within one of its five council districts, the Youth Council provides a unique platform for students to engage in city governance and advocacy.

Members participate in community service projects, assist city departments, and contribute to annual goal-setting efforts.

“The mission of the program is for the kids to learn about city government, understand its departments, and give them a voice in the city,” said Susan, youth council advisor.

In addition to their advisory role, Youth Council members have the opportunity to attend city council meetings and speak on behalf of the city’s youth. This hands-on experience equips them with valuable professional skills and networking opportunities.

“Our main goal is to tackle problems that we see in teenagers. It’s really cool because a lot of organizations are run by adults who don’t experience the issues that teens face,” said Caroline, past chairwoman for the Youth Council.

This year, the Waco Youth Council has expanded its outreach by launching a free podcast aimed at educating peers on crucial topics such as financial freedom, testing anxiety, and mental health. The podcast is part of their broader effort to address relevant youth issues and build skills among its members.

“We work a lot on talking about the things that are important to them, issues they want people to focus on in the city. Every year we set goals and work towards achieving them,” Susan added.

The Youth Council not only provides a platform for advocacy but also helps students build professionalism and create memorable experiences. “I was nervous about meeting new people and tackling projects, but the council was so welcoming and passionate about the community,” Caroline noted.

Applications for the Waco Youth Council are open until August 30. Interested students can apply by visiting the City of Waco website and searching for “Waco Youth Council.”
