    Amarillo ranked among top 10 cheapest places to live

    AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — As the cost of living increases, Americans continue to seek a high standard of living without breaking the bank. According to ConsumerAffairs, Amarillo was ranked as the sixth cheapest place to live in the U.S.

    According to the study, Amarillo has the cheapest healthcare costs among the top 10 cities, 14.6% below the national average. It also found Amarillo has the second-most affordable housing. Comparatively, New York City has the most expensive housing costs, 222.5% higher than the average city in the U.S.

    The study weighted the score of Amarillo using the following metrics to calculate the overall score:

    • Amarillo’s affordability score: 36.92
    • Cost of living index: 86.6
    • State-local tax burden per capita: $4,994
    • Unemployment rate: 3.3%
    • Median household income: $62,260

    The study determined that Amarillo’s household income is lower than Austin’s, which ranked fifth on this list and is the most affordable city in Texas.

    According to ConsumerAffairs, Knoxville, TN, was the cheapest city in the U.S., and New York City was the most expensive city. Most affordable cities are in the South, and eight of the top 10 are located in southern states. Detroit, MI’s unemployment rate is 12.4%, above the national average of 4.3%, the highest in the U.S.

    Lies! Considering we pay ridiculous rent for 80’s built apartments and houses! And we’re do not have the amenities of any LARGE city? This place is overpriced, has few amenities and is just a dirty, neglected town. Nothing here to draw attention except interstate tourist spots. Sadly

    this place is not worth what rents and house prices are. this place is a shit hole, to damn hot, to dry, flat, brown, and not a damn thing to do! the mall here is crap as well.
