AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Approximately 45 million Americans have chosen to rent, according to a study by the National Multifamily Housing Council. Convenience, cost and availability are some of the reasons Americans choose to rent over buy a house.

According to WalletHub, Amarillo was ranked third in the best places to rent in Texas and 29th in the U.S. The ranking highlighted Amarillo’s affordability, rental market and quality of life. The study compared 182 cities based on 21 key measures of rental attractiveness and quality of life.

A report by Realtor.com found renting a starter home saved an average of $1,067 per month more than homebuyers.

The study detailed and scored each city rental market and affordability rank and quality of life rank; Amarillo’s rank included:

    • Overall rank: 29
    • Total score: 52.14
    • Rental market & affordability rank: 22
    • Quality of life rank: 79

The study also found Amarillo is third in the nation in rental vacancy rate behind Augusta, GA, and Little Rock, AR.

WalletHub states Bismarck, ND, as the best place to rent. The study states most only spend around 15% of their annual rent, which is the lowest cost in the country. Bismarck also has the lowest insurance premiums on average at $116 per year, and the maximum security deposit a landlord can charge is only one month’s rent.

Americans opt for the flexibility and convenience that renting offers. Cities like Amarillo provide affordable, high-quality rental options, giving them a competitive edge when moving to Amarillo.
