AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — The Texas Department of Public Safety announced that the Public Safety Commission has formed a selection committee to help with the process of naming a new Texas Department of Public Safety Director.

According to a DPS press release, the committee includes Chairman Steven P. Mach, Nelda L. Blair, Dan Hord III, Larry Long and Steve Stodghill.

“Selecting the right leader for an agency like the Texas Department of Public Safety is no small task,” said PSC Chairman Mach. “It’s vital we evaluate each and every candidate that expresses serious interest and that we select the person who will take DPS into the future in order to meet the ever-changing needs of Texans and the challenges of public safety. The process began today with careful deliberation as we affirmed the minimum qualifications for this crucial position.”

Officials detailed that Chairman Mach and Commissioner Blair will make the two-person selection committee.

The selection committee will be accepting expressions of interest through Oct. 4, then a list of potential candidates will be applications evaluated and select finalist will be presented to the whole Commission for final interviews.

DPS stated that the commission aims to end their search before the year ends. Officials added that candidates and others parties interested are asked not to contact PSC members directly.

The current DPS Director, Steven C. McCraw, announced on Aug. 23, that he plans to retire following 15 years in the department. DPS said McCraw will continue to serve as Director until his successor is named.
