WHEELER COUNTY, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) – The Texas Department of Public Safety reported that one person was killed in a rollover wreck in Wheeler County, about one and a half miles west of Shamrock, on Friday afternoon.

According to DPS, a driver traveling in a 2003 GMC Yukon was westbound on State Spur 556 or Business I-40 at “an unsafe speed for roadway conditions, as there was a curve and a stop sign ahead.” Officials noted that “due to the unsafe speed,” the driver could not negotiate the curve and lost control of the Yukon. The Yukon proceeded to slide sideways and roll over an undetermined number of times.

DPS officials stated the driver was not wearing a seatbelt and was ejected during the crash.

The driver, 76-year-old Willie Curry of Oklahoma City, Okla., was pronounced dead at the scene by Wheeler County Justice of the Peace Rick Walden.

The crash remains under investigation by the Texas Highway Patrol Troopers.
