Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch Rodeo prepares with dress rehearsal

AMARILLO, Texas (KAMR/KCIT) — Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch Rodeo is set to return for its 80th year in under a week but before the big day, the rodeo held their dress rehearsal.

According to officials with Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch children were in full western attire as they will be on rodeo day. Officials added that these dedicated individuals will immerse themselves in their respective rodeo events, showcasing the precision, courage, and determination that make the Boys Ranch Rodeo a cherished tradition.

Many students are saddling up their horses as they prepare for the 80th annual Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch Rodeo. Faithlynn is getting ready for her fourth rodeo and will be doing pole bending and barrel racing. This year she will also be doing goat tying for the first time.

“You ride a horse like halfway. They have a goat tied, and you get the goat and you put it down, and you tie. It’s three feet and yeah,” said Faithlynn.

While Faithlynn may be competing in goat tying this year she says her love will always be with barrel racing.

“My favorite part is barrels, and I like it because it’s three of them, and you get to go fast and, like, really show your speed. You basically, you have three barrels, and you’re trying to get through them in a pattern without breaking it as fast as you can,” said Faithlynn.

The rodeo is giving the kids of Boys Ranch a way to enjoy some rodeo fun, but it is also teaching them lessons along the way.

“Well, it’s kind of like life. If you get bucked off a horse, you get back on and life’s the same way. If you get down in the valley, you climb back out. And that’s what I try to teach these kids,” said Director of Rodeo and Equine Mike Lowe.

The rodeo is on Oct. 12, and this year there will be a fall fest before the rodeo kicks off.
