Why you should bring your recyclables to Windward Mall on Saturday

HONOLULU (KHON2) — Hauula teen and Bottles4College founder Genshu Price is back at it again, helping brighten the future of Hawaii students.

Price announced the nonprofit will hold a large-scale HI-5¢ Recycling Drive on Saturday, July 6 at Windward Mall from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The profit hopes to collect enough recyclables to fill a large 35-foot box truck, which can hold more than 35,000 cans and bottles.

35,000 is like okay, this is a strong baseline. But hey, 41,000, 42,000, 50,000, that would be a dream come true as well. But we’re saying ‘Hey, as a baseline, let’s hit this and let’s shoot for the stars.’

Price said they are also looking for volunteers for the event. Students who sign up may be eligible to earn volunteer hours. To sign up, visit the Bottles4College website.

Bottles4College began when Genshu was only 12 years old, with a mission to collect 1 million cans and bottles to both protect the environment and help send Hawaii students to college.

He achieved his first goal in February 2023 with the help of partnerships with local companies and help from the community.

“One million cans and bottles is roughly $50,000 in tuition money,” said Price.

Earlier this year, Price gained national attention to continue his project and was named a 2024 Prudential Emerging Visionary.

So far, Bottles4College has collected and recycled more than 1.5 million cans and bottles to award close to $22,000 in scholarships.
