New weekend shuttle service comes

KANNAPOLIS — This weekend, Kannapolis will begin running a free shuttle service called the West Avenue Express to help patrons navigate downtown during peak busy times. The shuttles will then continue to run from 5-10 p.m. every Friday and Saturday.

There are two West Avenue Express shuttles, which run on electricity. Each can accommodate 16 people and are ADA accessible.

The two shuttles, nicknamed Lightning and Thunder, will make a continuous loop between four designated stops: the North Carolina Research Campus public parking deck, the top of the horseshoe, and the First Baptist Church rear access area, which are all on N. Research Campus Drive, and the intersection of West Avenue and Cannon Baller Way near the Swanee Theatre. Look for the signage designating the express stops.

“The shuttles offer a safe and convenient way for us to assist our downtown patrons who may be unable to find parking close to our major entertainment venues such as the Gem Theatre, Atrium Health Ballpark, and Swanee Theatre,” said Kannapolis City Manager Mike Legg. “This is especially important for those that have mobility challenges or for parents juggling small children.  However, everyone is welcome to ride the West Avenue Express, and we are hoping these new shuttles will make visits to our downtown more enjoyable for all.” Additional stops and hours of operation may be added for the West Avenue Express as the city determines the need for the service.

Please note this weekend there is an additional shuttle bus service that will take concertgoers from public parking lots to Village Park. Free concerts in Village Park this weekend include country super stars Pam Tillis Friday night and Tracy Byrd Saturday night.
